SCHENECTADY — Oneida Middle School staff located a loaded handgun in a Oneida Middle School student's locker Monday, Schenectady police announced in a press release Monday evening.

Community engagement officers arrived at the school around 2 p.m. for a report that staff had recovered a firearm, according to police. It was then determined that a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun was discovered inside the student's belongings inside the locker, police said.

A 13-year-old was arrested on scene with three separate felony counts: criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. No identifying information was provided due to the suspect's age, police said.

The city and school district have contacted Oneida Middle School students and families, according to the police press release, and are working with law enforcement in its investigation.
