Veteran standout Jackie Malone was the first Schenectady female junior bowler to roll a 300 game and average 200.

Like many of her peers, bowling has dropped far down Jackie Malone’s priority list in favor of numerous family responsibilities. Driving her son Michael (hockey) and daughter Rose (softball, volleyball) to practices and cheering them on at games takes precedence over rolling her own orbs down the lanes.

But that doesn’t mean that the former Ebonite and Hammer staff member doesn’t still possess the talent and knowledge that helped make her one of the Capital Region’s top bowlers for a couple of decades. The 43-year-old Scotia-Glenville and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake scholastic product honed her kegling craft at perennial national powerhouse Wichita State before finishing her collegiate career at Saint Peter’s.

Malone, formerly Robarge, currently averages 212 in the high-powered Towne Mixed Doubles league Wednesday nights at Towne Bowling Academy, and 220 in the Towne Majors Tuesday nights. Solid numbers to be sure, but Malone was once among the very best female bowlers in the area, and she was never afraid to test herself against the best male competitors, as well.

Although she doesn’t keep track of many career stats, she estimates that she’s in double figures for both perfect games and 800 triples. According to the bowl.com website, she’s recorded six perfect games since 2001, but that site doesn’t have any records for her earlier accomplishments when she was in her bowling prime. She once averaged as high as 228 when that average was a lot more meaningful than in this high-scoring era.

Malone was the first Schenectady female in the junior ranks to record both a perfect game and a 200 average. While 11 weeks pregnant, she finished in the top 50 at the U.S. Women’s Open in 2012. Malone once won the singles division at the Green Mountain Open, and she medaled for the Adirondack Region at the Empire State Games. Malone also made the TV show numerous times in the now-defunct Huck Finn Capital Region Bowling Show.

Malone bowled in many WASA (Women’s All Star Association) tournaments and made match play in at least one event. She also placed in the top five at numerous TNBA Rhodman Championships.

She bowled well enough to earn a spot first on the Ebonite staff, and then on the Hammer staff early in her career.

“Just to be asked to be on the Ebonite and Hammer staffs was very important to me,” she said.

When she competed in college, women bowlers didn’t have the same opportunities they enjoy today.

“I was there when the NCAA first started having women’s teams,” Malone explained. “They didn’t have separate tournaments for the women. You would go to an NCAA tournament, and the women would be just part of the men’s tournament. One year, I led the qualifying for the Intercollegiate Team Championship tournament.

“Bowling at Wichita State was a fantastic experience for me, and they really taught me how to bowl competitively. But I couldn’t afford to stay there, so I marketed myself and got the chance to bowl at Saint Peter’s. I enjoyed college and college bowling so much. I wanted to be a college professor and get my [doctorate]. I did very well academically at Saint Peter’s and earned high honors in sociology.”

After bowling in college, there weren’t many opportunities for Malone to compete at the highest level. The Professional Women’s Bowling Association had ceased operations, but when it reappeared a few years later, she competed in several PWBA tournaments, including one where she received national attention by bringing four generations of her family under one roof to watch her compete in Rochester.

“That was one of my coolest memories. There wasn’t a pro tour for me to bowl after college, but when the tour came back, it was something that I really wanted to do. I didn’t cash, but I remember finishing in the middle of the pack in the Lucci Doubles, even though I was suffering through a meniscus tear,” she said.

Malone also recalls winning the prestigious Women’s Doubles Invitational at Boulevard Bowl.

She learned the game from her mother, who was the BH-BL junior bowling program coach along with Jackie McDowell.

“It’s interesting, because now that my kids are into sports, I can see the similarities with how I acted as a kid,” Malone said. “You get really frustrated when things don’t go well, and it’s hard to listen to your parents.”

Malone certainly had all the tools, both physically and mentally, to succeed.

“I feel what I accomplished as a junior bowler was a big deal, especially considering it was at a time before the technology in equipment really took off,” she noted. “I used a Brunswick Danger Zone to roll my perfect game, and I used that ball and a Triton Elite to average 200. From that point on, technology really took over the sport.

“My strength in bowling wasn’t keeping up with the strike fest that bowling is today,” Malone added. “I was better at competing in hard conditions, grinding, making my spares, figuring out the lanes and making adjustments. I traveled and looked for tournaments where I had to make tougher adjustments. I had the knowledge and skills to make those adjustments. I also competed against the men many times and was never afraid to do so. But I can’t out-rev the men. I’ve retooled my game. I used to throw it pretty well, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve stopped fighting what I can’t do and I play smarter. I like to hook the ball, but I’ll roll it hard and straight if I have to.”

Malone understands she doesn’t have the time to spend working on her bowling game these days, but she doesn’t rule out trying to sharpen her skills in the future.

“I know I’m a good bowler,” Malone said. “I’ve made cuts bowling with the men at tournaments, and I know my game. Maybe in a couple of years I’ll get more serious about my game again. Right now, I like my second-shift leagues because it gives me more time to devote to my family.”

STRIKES & SPARES

Very sad to hear about the recent passing of Albert “Bert” Brindisi, who was not only a great bowler but also perhaps one of the best lane conditioners at a time when all the lanes were oiled by hand. Brindisi, 74, was a three-time ABA Player of the Year and was sought out by many area lanes — including Sportsman’s Bowl — for his expertise at setting up any lanes for any type of condition.

Congratulations to “Gentleman Jack” Rosse, who was recently honored for joining the 50-year membership club in the Macejka’s Edgewood Independent Bowling League at Towne Bowling Academy. A huge crowd showed up for Rosse’s celebration, which included a plaque, an engraved lane and an engraved jacket. According to league secretary/treasurer David Samborin, Rosse joins an elite group of 50-year members that includes Matty Macejka, Norm Hart and Chuck Barbarulo. Like his peers before him, Rosse was honored not only for his longevity but also for his dedication, sportsmanship, commitment and dedication. The next group of league longevity includes Dennis Anunziatta (45 years), Paul Tourtellot (44 years), Mikey Decerbo (42 years) and Marco Farina (39 years).
