MAYFIELD - Southern Adirondack Snowmobile Association’s third Polar Plunge event comes to Wally’s Driftwood Park next Saturday.

Participants will don bathing suits and brave the winter water as they take a quick dip in the water at Wally’s Driftwood Park, (with proper safety precautions in place)

The annual Polar Plunge returns Saturday, January 13 at 12 p.m. Participants can register with a $10 donation per person, which will help support the Southern Adirondack Snowmobile Association. Participants will receive a free koozie from the Snowmobile Association with every signup

“It started in a winter like this, when there was no ice on the lake, no snow on the trails,” said Dave Jones, President of the Southern Adirondack Snowmobile Association. “It’s something fun, to get everybody out and doing something on the weekend and we turned it into a fundraiser.”

The day will also include music starting from 1-4 p.m. with The Sophisticats and from 8-10 p.m. with Redneck Yacht Club, featuring Vinny Michaels, Mike Porter and Todd Sardella.

Donations will help the Southern Adirondack Snowmobile Association with equipment upgrades and maintenance of the area’s snowmobile trails.

The Polar Plunge had about 100 participants last year, and had a lot more spectators than it had participants, Jones said. The group does not have a specific goal in mind for how much they hope this year’s event will raise. The club is looking to eventually be able to upgrade a piece of grooming equipment, this kind of equipment, even 10-years-old, can cost around $200,000, Jones said.

“We also have some businesses who match the amount of money we receive from the people that jump in,” Jones said. “On average we get around $3,000 out of this event.”

Jumpers and spectators all have a lot of fun at the Polar Plunge, Jones said. Without snow and ice you can not use snowmobiles, and this event is a good way to get people out and about, he said.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. on January 13 at Wally's Driftwood Park at 530 Vandenburgh Point Road in Mayfield.

The club has around 350 members, Jones said.
