SCHENECTADY — An online survey from the Schenectady City School District seeks to collect community feedback about school safety, community engagement and the environment in district school buildings.

The survey, which is now open on the district’s website through April 28, will assist the district in setting goals and crafting policies related to school climate.

“We should be doing this on an annual basis and it hasn’t always been done,” Schenectady Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr. said. “We have to do it as part of our school district improvement plan and we have to conduct these surveys to get voices and engagement. We should also be doing them as we build safety plans across the district and find out what families are saying and how they’re feeling. In the past it wasn’t always done or it was spotty.”

The district is asking local parents to complete one survey per household, with feedback sought for the school building that the family’s eldest child attends for grades 5-12.

The survey offers a series of 44 multiple-choice questions asking district parents if they agree or disagree with questions including “my child is safe at this school” and “this school communicates how important it is to respect the practices of all cultures.”

The survey also queries district parents about whether they consider bullying and/or cyberbullying a problem in their child’s school and whether their students have enough healthy food options available to them at school.

Soler said the survey will be part of an ongoing effort to collect community input.

“It’ll look new but this is something that we should be doing to get feedback from the community on community engagement, safety, the environment to try to help us set better goals in improving our school climate,” Soler said.

The survey concludes with a series of questions regarding district policies and procedures, with the poll asking parents if they believe school rules are applied equally to all students and if discipline is meted out fairly in the district.
