JOHNSTOWN - The Greater Johnstown School District is again welcoming community members to swim or stroll through its facilities this winter.

The Community Walking Program began on Nov. 28 and will continue Tuesdays through Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Warren Street Elementary School. All local residents are welcome and must sign in at the front desk, according to a press release from the district.

Beginning Dec. 2, community members were also able to enjoy the district’s Olympic-sized swimming pool on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. To access the pool, park  by the tennis courts and use the rear entrance.

Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Toddlers must be in swim diapers and personal swimming aides are allowed, but pool floats are not.

The programs will run when school is in session and close during breaks. Winter break will take place Dec. 22 through Jan. 1. February break is Feb. 19 to 23 and spring break is April 1 to 5. If the schools close for inclement weather, so will the walking and swimming programs.

“After taking a bit of a hiatus during COVID, we feel that it is important to have these health programs available so that community members of all ages will have the opportunity to stay active this winter in a safe and supervised setting,” said Superintendent Dr. William Crankshaw.
